Geoff Kohl says “deister’s a pretty neat company . . .they bill themselves as an RFID company . . .beyond just simply being badges and doors . . .really pushing the technology . . . cool stuff going on there”. Hear his full report on deister and his recommendations that the security industry examine our key control system beginning at minute 22.
We just flew back from ISC East and boy, are our arms (and feet) tired!
Seriously, it was a fantastic show from a product provider’s perspective. And proof, in these days of instant communication, maniacal amounts of media messages, LinkingIn, Tweeting and blog communications, that face-to-face interpersonal communication still tops the list for providing integrators and end-users a clear understanding of how seemingly well-known technologies can still be used in unconventional (or at least “not-yet-considered” ) ways. And we propose that spending time to educate yourself on new technologies is worth breaking away from your keyboard and screen for a bit.
From a sales standpoint, this is exceedingly true. At deister, we’re the first to admit that our electronic key management system can look, on the surface, like a fairly expensive plain-old key cabinet. But demonstrating our proxSafe® key management system, we saw dozens of “Aha” moments register on the faces of integrators and contractors when they realized that key management can enhance an access control system in applications. How? By registering and tracking the who, what, when and how long a key has been out of its home, by tracking the mileage of keys assigned to company vehicles, by alarming on missing keys that have been out too long and more. Further, this key management system can save companies tens of thousands by allowing keys to still be a “technology” of choice in situations where keys still make sense over badges – internal doors used by certain staff, closets only accessed by contractors who shouldn’t hold access control badges, vehicles, large equipment housings, etc.
And those customer meetings were great!
But there was a second set of meetings that reminded us we sometimes needs to step away from the keyboard more often – meetings with the press. More than virtually anyone, members of the press have the momentous task of sorting through a plethora of “same old, same old” information to find something that is either truly new and innovative or a new and innovative way of using an established technology. And we know how seriously they take that job – at least in the security industry.
For example, when we explained how deister is developing RFID tags for linens, and the various applications of those tags, more than one press expert noted the immediate benefit for loss prevention, but also how RFID in surgical scrubs might help locate a doctor sleeping in an on-call room or help determine whether all employees are evacuated in crisis situations. Further – they immediately started seeing the big picture of how these kinds of advancements might integrate with other industry products and technologies – new and old.
After a few dozen press meetings, it was evident that our industry media are determined to educate their readers.
So it’s important to keep supporting the efforts of these dedicated journalists by not only reading their blogs and following their tweets, but taking 15 minutes to actually step away from the electronic media and sit down to thumb through their magazines to get the full picture. You might find an “aha” moment of your own by spotting an article by an editor whose writing you admire, noting the name of a familiar colleague who sent in an editorial or seeing the graphics that just don’t translate to tweets and blogs. And that may help you design a better security system for you or for your clients.
Personal meetings and page-by-page reading . . .they may not only good for your soul – they just may be good for your business.
It’s a given that access control supports the securing doors in commercial enterprise. Entrances and exits – whether external to a building or venue, or internal for means of greater security in high risk areas – are the foundation of access control. And there are myriad options for access control in the industry that perform these “at the door” functions. deister is proud that its flagship proxMagic® reader performs at the door functions and does so in a way that is “outside the box” or, as we term it “outside the door” – reading multi-frequency, multi-modulation and multi-protocol cards like mifare®, ISOI5693, HID®, Indala®, deister, PIV-II, 125kHz and 13.56MHz smart cards. This provides enterprise companies freedom from proprietary card and reader technologies, allowing integration of virtually any multiple credential enterprise.
But we don’t stop there. “Outside of the door” thinking is our unique niche.
And it all starts with the technology. We make a strong case for having the most advanced RFID Technology in the Access Control Market because of our historical perspective on RFID. deister was established in Germany in 1977, developing our RFID technologies in products like our flagship GuardTour product. Shortly after we came to the U.S., we began servicing a unique market – the pigeon racing market.
Pigeon racing?
Yes, pigeon racing.
deister’s Unikon electronic pigeon racing timer is known as the world’s most trusted and advanced technology in this space. There is no utilization of RFID where the failure to ensure a single read has such a significant impact on the application.
So, making the leap from pigeon racing to the development of the company’s other products makes sense – it’s our “outside the door” thinking. It’s the way we do business.
Have you thought outside the door in developing your access control plan?
You may need access control not only to monitor the comings and goings of personnel – and the assurance that those systems are multi-functional, smart and scalable – but you may also need to monitor the comings and goings of vehicles, keys or other assets. And have you thought of the ways to integrate your access control plan effectively by considering the use of open architecture software; aesthetic benefits like low-profile footprints and changeable covers for all decors; robust design to withstand inclement weather, normal wear and tear, use and even abuse; plus development to multiple global standards for companies with global footprints.
Have you thought not just “outside” the door – but beyond it, with vehicle entrances, asset tracking, or even the securing of security measures as simple as keys (yes, keys – you know you’ve probably still got some).
So, as you’re developing your access control plan and thinking outside the door, think deister. Ask for info on our products from your integrator or distributor or reach out to us directly and will connect you with an “outside the door” thinker we know. www.deister.com, +1-703-368-2739

Company History
Shortly after deister was established in the U.S., the company serviced a unique market – the pigeon racing market. While that sounds like an unusual route into security, the gravitas surrounding this multi-million dollar sport was the catalyst in the company’s developing virtually infallible RFID technologies. Pigeon racing is a worldwide sport with a host of loyal participants who garner million dollar-plus purses for their efforts. deister’s Unikon electronic pigeon racing timer is the world’s most trusted and advanced technology in this space. There is no utilization of RFID where the failure to ensure a single read has such a significant impact on the application. deister was the RFID company able to deliver on this reliability requirement.
As a technology company, deister realized there was a swath of industries RFID could benefit and focused their technology acumen on security. deister developed many custom RFID technologies for industry stalwarts like GE, Siemens, and Tyco. The company first entered the security market with its GuardTour product. For the next15 years, deister supplied an increasing array of custom designed RFID products for its growing base of major OEM customers.
